One of the best guitarists in the world.
Boston Globe
She gets nuances out of the classical guitar few guitarists since
Segovia have matched. Everything she performs bespeaks perfect technical
control yet suggests spontaneous improvisationthe art that conceals
art.

West Meets East
“Sharon Isbin and Amjad Ali Khan deliver a transcendent fusion of
classical guitar and sarod ... Isbin is one of the finest players on the
planet and has shown herself to be comfortable working in almost any
musical style. This thoroughly engrossing live set was recorded at the
Aspen Music Festival marking the 30th consecutive year that Isbin had
performed there ... There are so many exciting passages ... Khan and
sons come together in a spectacular dialogue with Isbin and tabla titan
Kavthekar for a flight that will take your breath away. Just as
impressive as the pyrotechnics are the quieter, more meditative alap
sections that introduce the longer ragas - I could listen to those all
day!”

Six-String Sojourner
“Isbin is noted for her onstage charisma and playing with precision,
variegated colors, and heartfelt expression. At her GFA concert, she
drew the audience inside the music, reveling for long stretches with
closed eyes, holding listeners enraptured until the final notes faded
... She has has furthered the goals Segovia long ago envisioned for the
guitar. They included elevating it to the status of a classical concert
instrument; commissioning contemporary composers to write for it; and
establishing guitar performance curricula at conservatories, colleges,
and universities.”

| Sharon Isbin Gives Thrilling North American Premiere of Tan Dun Concerto for Guitar & Orchestra (Yi2)
January 14, 2023
Grammy and Academy Award-winning Chinese composer Tan Dun composed
Concerto for Guitar & Orchestra (Yi2) for Isbin who has performed it
throughout Europe and Asia, and recorded it on her Grammy-winning album
for Warner Classics. On January 14, 2023, she gave the North American
Premiere with the Chicago Philharmonic conducted by Scott Speck for a
packed house in Chicago's Harris Theater (see photos).
Third Coast Review: “Yi2 was an exciting finale to a cross-cultural evening of
exquisite sounds. Isbin also leans into her instrument so that it seems
an extension of herself. It was a bright and energizing moment before
she gave an encore bow to which the audience enthusiastically cheered.”
Chicago Classical Review: “Isbin was fully in command. One was confident
her account of the solo part was authoritative as she dispatched its
hairy cadenza with ease. When she took the stage for an encore, she
offered the waltz Natalia by Venezuelan Antonio Lauro, a hypnotically
flowing ode to composer’s daughter that serenely ended the evening.”
Hyde Park Herald: “This American premiere featured Isbin at the guitar, and
she was a wonder to watch and hear. Her technical prowess and musical
intuition were all on display.” |

“The centerpiece of the night was the famous Concierto de Aranjuez by
Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo, with Sharon Isbin, arguably the
world’s foremost classical guitarist. The pairing produced one of the
orchestra’s most spellbinding concerto performances in recent memory.
The performance started with technical mastery and quickly rose to the
level of a spiritual experience... Isbin has a surgeon’s concentration, a
rocket scientist’s skills and a troubadour’s heart.”

“The concerto by Chris Brubeck takes off, right from the
beginning, with Isbin delivering rapid-fire virtuosity with
infectious themes ... The slow middle is a tender jazz-based
tribute to Dave Brubeck, and Isbin played with heartfelt
warmth and tenderness... Isbin also wowed and touched with
Joaquìn Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez. She was truly
charismatic in the virtuosic first and third movements, and
eloquently tender in the gorgeous slow middle section. Isbin
is much more than a virtuoso; she is an artist of depth.”
